On April 24, an announcement appeared in the Garry’s Mod community center, with a subheading stating the removal of addons related to Nintendo games due to copyright violations. A large part of the gaming community was outraged by this news, flooding various social media platforms with posts about the perceived injustice from Nintendo.

The story began months earlier when individual content creators started receiving complaints from an alleged Nintendo representative, claiming copyright infringement. This situation reached its peak, as mentioned earlier, on April 24, when the announcement about the removal of addons was published. Many content creators spoke out on the matter, including Hudson633, who wrote an article about this issue in the Gmod Communities Archive. Several international news websites, such as TheGamer, GamesRadar, mxdwn, and others, also covered the topic. It is worth noting that the community made efforts to preserve the remaining addons in the workshop by uploading them to Google Drive.

Later, a theory started spreading within the community about the abuse of copyright rules and unfair complaints against addons by a specific individual referred to as the “Aaron guy.” This theory gained traction due to a detail regarding an incorrect email address found in the complaint messages. The outrage in the Garry’s Mod community grew over the fact that the game’s official representatives allegedly fell for such an obvious trolling attempt. The community split into two camps—those who supported the theory of official complaints from Nintendo and those who believed in the idea that a single person was behind the mass trolling of the entire community.

Continuing the topic of the troll named Aaron Peters, it is worth mentioning reports of similar chaos occurring in other games as well. This list includes the workshops of games and programs such as Left 4 Dead, Team Fortress 2, Source Filmmaker, and others. Coming together, users managed to reach out to the game’s creator, Garry Newman, who addressed the issue in a Twitter post:

Yes, we’ve received your emails and private messages, we’ve seen your discussions, we’re doing our own investigation. We need to take these things seriously when it comes to Nintendo, but we can’t let people abuse the DMCA either.

Some news sites have also updated the story to include information about the person claiming to be a Nintendo official, noting that the email address used in these complaints is fake.

In the end, we would like to note that this story is not over yet, but we can already see progress in the form of Harry Newman’s reaction to the whole situation, who has announced that he is investigating the matter. No matter how this story ends, it is important to note how much stories like this affect the community as a whole. Even in serious moments like complaints from a big company, the community doesn’t get discouraged, trying to stand their ground, something that seems to be shared by the developers of the game itself.
